Sean o'Callaghan

The Austrian entrepeneur Karl Egger and his family have been visitors to Tuscany for decades. They fell in love with the town of Radda in Chianti, between the cities of Siena and Florence. They loved the area so much, they decided to start a winery. Tenuta di Carleone was founded in 2012 with the help of Sean O’Callaghan, an Englishman who had been working with a producer nearby. Sean and Karl shared a passion for the Sangiovese grape and set out to make it the singular focus of their classically inspired wines with a twist.

Philosophy

Sean believes in a minimal approach to farming and wine making. All the vineyards are farmed organically or are in the conversion process. No commercial yeasts or additives are used during winemaking and they eschew any fining or filtration. 100% Sangiovese, long maceration times, and the use of cement highlight Sean's style. His wines represent a more modern side of Chianti that has earned him the respect of even the most traditional of critics in Italy.
